The Career Maturity and Education Aspiration of the Adolescents in Poor Families

Abstract
This study was designed to examine the effects of poverty on career maturity and educational aspiration with mediating effects of three types of social ties and academic achievement. Using the data of the Korean Youth Panel Survey, subjects were 3,449 middle school students. The analyses method was structural equation model.
The result showed that poverty had not significant effects on career maturity and educational aspiration. But poor group adolescents had low level of tie-to-parents, tie-to-friends, and academic achievement. These three variables were positively related to career maturity and academic achievement was also positively related to educational aspiration. So academic achievement appeared to be very important variable in adolescent educational and career development process. The results showed that the educational welfare policy to improve the level of academic achievements of poor group adolescents is required.
